Computer Science

What is computer science?

Computer science is a very large subject with lots of applications. Computer scientists design new software, solve computing problems and develop different ways to use technology.

But, whatever they’re doing, all computer scientists rely on ‘computational thinking’.

Computational Thinking

Computational thinking involves looking at a problem and working out a way a computer might be able to help you solve it. To do this, you need to understand how a computer processes information.

A programmer, coder or software engineer is someone who designs and makes computer programs. They might use one type of computer language or many. They use computational thinking all the time.

Programmers are logical thinkers and problem-solvers. They look at problems and try to come up with different ways of solving them.

Careers

One example of a successful career in computer science is Bronwen Zande. Bronwen Zande uses computer science daily as a developer and director of a Brisbane tech company called Soul Solutions, where they use Microsoft technologies such as the Kinect sensor to enable voice and gesture control of computers.

I'm a problem solver, and I don't like letting the computer win!

Her company aids clients in solving real-world problems using computer technology, like an online student portal for a university and an app that promotes public health.

As a programmer, she has to constantly learn the latest technologies, and play with the latest devices.

You can work in any industry around the world, which you don't really get with other jobs.
